The creator of American Auto, Justin Spitzer, has shared insights about the show’s cancelled third season. The series was brought to an end after its second season by NBC.
Spitzer took to Twitter to share that Season 3 of American Auto was going to depict Katherine Hastings and Payne Motors finally finding success and taking the world by storm. He expressed regret that they were unable to make the episodes but noted his immense pride in the 23 episodes they did produce. He went on to thank the show’s outstanding cast, writers, crew, and fans.
American Auto was set at the corporate headquarters of the fictional Detroit-based Payne Motors, run by former pharmaceutical CEO Katherine Hastings, played by Ana Gasteyer. The cast also included Harriet Dyer as CCO Sadie Ryan; Jon Barinholtz as Wesley Payne, the grandson of the company’s retired CEO; Humphrey Ker as General Counsel Elliot Chisholm; Michael B. Washington as Chief Product Designer Cyrus Knight; Tye White as assembly line worker-turned-executive suit Jack Fortin; and X Mayo as Katherine’s assistant Dori Ovens.
In the Season 2 finale that aired on April 18, Katherine achieved an unexpected win with the sales of the unremarkable Pika car, allowing her and her team to keep their jobs. Spitzer said in a post-show interview that the character could now start meeting the company in the way she wants to and make her mark, becoming more proactive and less reactive.
