Assassin’s Creed Live-Action Series Ordered at Netflix Release Date

Netflix has officially ordered a live-action Assassin’s Creed series to production, marking the streaming giant’s latest push into video game adaptations.

The announcement comes after months of development discussions between Netflix and Ubisoft, the publisher behind the popular gaming franchise.

Tom Blyth will star as the lead character in the series. Blyth recently gained recognition for his role in The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.

The show will explore the ongoing conflict between the Assassins and Templars across multiple time periods. This approach mirrors the game series’ signature format of jumping between historical eras.

Jeb Stuart will serve as showrunner and executive producer. Stuart previously worked on The Fugitive and Vikings: Valhalla.

Netflix hasn’t revealed specific details about which historical periods the series will cover. The games have featured settings ranging from the Crusades to the American Revolution to Victorian London.

“We’re excited to partner with Ubisoft to bring this beloved franchise to Netflix members around the world,” said Peter Friedlander, Netflix’s Vice President of Scripted Series.

Ubisoft Film & Television will produce alongside Netflix. The production represents Ubisoft’s continued efforts to expand their gaming properties into other media.

The series joins Netflix’s growing catalog of video game adaptations. Recent successes include The Witcher, Arcane, and Cyberpunk: Edgerunners.

Production is expected to begin later this year. Netflix hasn’t announced a premiere date for the series yet.

The Assassin’s Creed franchise has sold over 200 million copies worldwide since its debut in 2007. A previous film adaptation starring Michael Fassbender was released in 2016 but received mixed reviews.

Stuart’s involvement brings significant genre experience to the project. His work on Vikings: Valhalla demonstrated his ability to handle historical action sequences and complex mythology.

The series will need to balance the franchise’s intricate lore with accessibility for new viewers. The games feature a complex narrative involving genetic memory and modern-day conflicts.

Netflix’s commitment to a full series order suggests confidence in the project’s potential. Many streaming adaptations begin with limited episode orders or pilot commitments.
