Chicago Fire announced that Daniel Kyri will return to the NBC drama for a limited run during Season 14.
The actor, who played paramedic Darren Ritter for five seasons, left the series as a regular cast member at the end of Season 12. His character transferred to a different firehouse after struggling with the aftermath of a traumatic incident.
Kyri’s return comes as the show enters its 14th season this fall.
Details about his comeback remain limited. NBC hasn’t revealed how many episodes Kyri will appear in or what storyline will bring Ritter back to Firehouse 51.
The character’s departure allowed him to focus on his mental health after experiencing PTSD from a dangerous rescue situation. His transfer was written as a way for Ritter to get a fresh start away from the memories that haunted him at 51.
Chicago Fire showrunner Andrea Newman previously indicated the door would remain open for Kyri’s return. The limited comeback suggests the writers found a natural way to bring the character back into the fold.
Season 14 premieres this September on NBC. The series continues to be one of the network’s most popular dramas, anchoring the Chicago franchise alongside Chicago Med and Chicago P.D.
Kyri joined the cast in Season 8 and became a fan favorite for his portrayal of the earnest, dedicated paramedic. His character’s struggles with mental health resonated with viewers and highlighted the psychological toll that first responders face.
The actor’s return adds another familiar face to the upcoming season as the show continues its long run on primetime television.
