- Drew Barrymore apologizes to Writers Guild of America
- Stresses she didn’t intend to upset or hurt anyone
- Shares tearful video on Instagram
Drew Barrymore recently posted a heartfelt apology to the Writers Guild of America (WGA), expressing her remorse for her actions and emphasizing that hurting people is not in her nature. In a tearful video shared on Instagram, the actress stated, “I never meant to upset or hurt anyone… That’s not who I am.”
Barrymore’s video comes after she faced backlash from the WGA for her talk show, “The Drew Barrymore Show,” using non-union writers while striking a deal with ViacomCBS. The guild accused her of not adhering to their rules and issued a “do not work” order to prevent their members from collaborating with her show.
In the emotional clip, Barrymore takes full responsibility and admits her mistake, saying, “I deeply, deeply apologize for any ripples this may have caused … It was never a question, ‘Should we or shouldn’t [hire union writers]?’ You absolutely should.” The actress believed that working with the guild was always the right thing to do.
Furthermore, Barrymore emphasized her respect for writers, acknowledging their hard work and the importance of abiding by the rules. She shared, “My intention is always goodwill, and my heart is always in the right place. I just want to say that you guys have always mattered to me. You give me life. I respect your work, your passion, your dedication.”
Barrymore’s apology seems to have resonated with some WGA members, with notable playwright and screenwriter Chrisi Karvonides taking to social media to express her appreciation for the actress’s sincerity. She wrote, “I look forward to seeing the changes made and want to thank you, on behalf of myself and the entire WGA, for your heartfelt and tearful apology.”
