Good Doctor actor Hill Harper is officially entering politics as he announces his run for the United States Senate. He will be contending for a seat in Michigan, where he plans to challenge Democratic Rep. Elissa Slotkin for the position currently held by outgoing senator Debbie Stabenow.
With the news of his candidacy, Harper’s future on the medical drama—which films in British Columbia, Canada—may be affected. The popular series, which stars Freddie Highmore, has been renewed by ABC for a seventh season.
Harper, who portrays the character Dr. Marcus Andrews, is one of only three remaining original cast members from the first season of The Good Doctor. In the season six finale, his character stepped down as hospital president, which could set up a potential exit for the actor.
Harper is a lawyer-turned-actor with degrees from Brown University (with Latin honors) and Harvard Law. Before joining The Good Doctor, he was known for his role as Dr. Sheldon Hawkes on the CBS procedural drama CSI: NY, which spanned nine seasons and ended in 2013.
In his full campaign announcement video, Harper emphasizes the need for representatives who will take on special interests, remove money from politics, and work to make the government more inclusive. He asks for the support of the people of Michigan in his fight to bring change to Washington D.C.
We can all feel it: D.C just isn’t getting things done for people. We need representatives who’ll take on special interests, get money out of politics, and make our government work for all of us. That’s why today, I’m announcing my campaign for U.S. Senate in Michigan! pic.twitter.com/lv11ncDcsK
