Inga Swenson, the accomplished actress best known for her role as Gretchen Kraus in the TV series “Benson,” has passed away at the age of 90. Throughout her long and successful career, Swenson graced the screen and stage with her exceptional talent and captivating presence.
Born in Omaha, Nebraska, on Dec 29, 1932, Swenson began her career in the 1950s, making her debut in the soap opera, “Guiding Light.” From there, she went on to perform in numerous plays, such as “110 in the Shade,” “The Miracle Worker,” and “The Fourposter,” earning her rave reviews and a Tony Award nomination in 1963. In 1959, she received an Obie Award for her performance in the off-Broadway play “The First Family.”
Swenson took on the role of Gretchen Kraus, a German domestic and later city budget director, on the popular TV series “Benson” (1979-1986). The role garnered her two Emmy Award nominations. Her other television credits include appearances in “The Defenders,” “Bonanza,” and “Hogan’s Heroes.”
In addition to her television work, Swenson also appeared in several films such as “The Miracle Worker” (1962), “Advise & Consent” (1962), and “Lipstick” (1976). Despite her various accomplishments, it was her role as Gretchen Kraus in “Benson” that cemented her legacy in the entertainment industry.
Swenson is survived by her husband, actor Lowell Harris, and their two sons, Mark and James.
