The Dawson’s Creek reunion benefit has hit a snag after James Van Der Beek withdrew from the event due to illness, organizers announced Tuesday.
Lin-Manuel Miranda will step in to replace the actor at the charity fundraiser scheduled for next weekend in Los Angeles.
Van Der Beek, who played Dawson Leery in the hit WB series from 1998 to 2003, was set to appear alongside his former castmates for the first time in over a decade. The reunion was organized to raise funds for literacy programs in underserved communities.
"James is disappointed he can’t be there, but his health comes first," said event coordinator Sarah Chen.
The 46-year-old actor has been dealing with what his representatives describe as a minor respiratory issue that requires rest. Van Der Beek’s team expects a full recovery within the week.
Miranda, the Hamilton creator, volunteered to fill the slot after learning about Van Der Beek’s situation through mutual friends in the theater community. He’ll participate in a Q&A session and help auction off memorabilia from various TV shows.
“I’ve always been a huge fan of the show, so this is actually a dream come true for me,”
Miranda said in a statement.
**Katie Holmes, Joshua Jackson, and Michelle Williams** are still confirmed to attend the benefit. The event organizers expect to raise over $500,000 for Reading is Fundamental, a nonprofit that provides books and literacy resources to children.
Van Der Beek had been looking forward to the reunion after years of scheduling conflicts prevented similar gatherings. He recently moved back to Los Angeles with his family after spending time in Texas.
The benefit will take place at the Beverly Hills Hotel with both in-person and virtual attendance options available.
