John Oliver delivered a pointed critique of Disney CEO Bob Iger during Sunday’s episode of Last Week Tonight, condemning the executive’s decision to suspend Jimmy Kimmel from ABC’s late-night lineup.
The HBO host didn’t mince words when addressing what he called corporate cowardice in the face of political pressure.
“History will remember the cowards who chose silence over standing up for what’s right,”
Oliver said during his opening monologue.
Disney announced Kimmel’s indefinite suspension last week following mounting pressure over the host’s political commentary. The decision came after several high-profile advertisers threatened to pull support from ABC programming.
Oliver’s criticism focused on what he described as Disney’s pattern of bending to external pressure rather than supporting its talent.
“This isn’t about politics,” Oliver explained. “It’s about whether media companies will stand behind their people when things get uncomfortable.”
The suspension marks the first time in Jimmy Kimmel Live’s 20-year run that the host has been pulled from air for content-related issues. ABC hasn’t provided a timeline for Kimmel’s potential return.
Industry observers note the move reflects broader tensions between entertainment companies and political commentary in late-night television.
Oliver used his platform to call out what he sees as a troubling trend of corporate executives prioritizing short-term financial considerations over editorial independence.
“Bob Iger built his reputation on making tough decisions,” Oliver said. “Apparently that reputation was overrated.”
The criticism comes as Disney faces increasing scrutiny over its handling of political content across its various properties. The company has been navigating pressure from multiple sides regarding its programming choices.
Neither Disney nor ABC responded to requests for comment about Oliver’s remarks.
