Malcolm-Jamal Warner, the actor known for his roles in The Cosby Show and The Resident, has died at age 54.
Warner’s family confirmed his death through a statement released Monday evening. No cause of death was immediately provided.
The actor gained fame playing Theo Huxtable on The Cosby Show from 1984 to 1992. He was just 14 when the series began.
Warner continued acting throughout his career, appearing in numerous television shows and films. His most recent major role was Dr. AJ Austin on the medical drama The Resident, which ran from 2018 to 2023.
Born in Jersey City, New Jersey, Warner began his entertainment career as a child. He also pursued music, releasing several albums as a bassist and spoken word artist.
“Malcolm was not only a talented actor but a devoted father and friend,” his family said in the statement. “His passion for storytelling and music touched everyone who knew him.”
Warner directed episodes of several television series, including The Cosby Show and Malcolm & Eddie. He also appeared in Community, Sons of Anarchy, and American Crime Story.
The actor is survived by his daughter and his parents. Funeral arrangements haven’t been announced.
Warner’s representatives at Creative Artists Agency confirmed the family’s statement but declined to provide additional details.
