Hulu has cancelled its comedy series Mid-Century Modern after one season, according to executive producer Matt Hubbard.
The show won’t return for a second season despite what Hubbard called “ten great episodes” in a social media post announcing the cancellation.
Hubbard expressed disappointment with the decision while thanking fans who supported the series. “Ten great episodes… not enough,” he wrote, acknowledging that the show’s brief run wasn’t sufficient to secure renewal.
The comedy centered on a family navigating life in the 1950s and 1960s. It featured period-appropriate storylines and design elements that reflected the mid-century aesthetic.
Mid-Century Modern premiered earlier this year as part of Hulu’s original programming slate. The streaming service has been evaluating its content library and making decisions about which shows to continue.
The cancellation comes as streaming platforms increasingly focus on viewership metrics and subscriber engagement when determining renewals.
Hubbard didn’t specify the exact reasons behind Hulu’s decision. Streaming services typically consider factors like audience size, completion rates, and production costs when evaluating shows.
The series joins other recent cancellations across various streaming platforms as companies adjust their content strategies. Networks and streamers have become more selective about which projects receive multi-season commitments.
“Ten great episodes… not enough”
Fans of the show expressed disappointment on social media following the announcement. Many praised the series’ attention to period detail and its approach to family dynamics.
The cancellation means the show’s storylines will remain unresolved. The ten-episode first season represented the complete run of Mid-Century Modern on Hulu’s platform.
