NBC confirmed that Octavio Pisano will return as Detective Joe Velasco for the Season 27 premiere of Law & Order: SVU, according to Entertainment Weekly. The actor’s comeback marks a quick turnaround after his character’s exit in the Season 25 finale.
Pisano joined SVU in Season 23 as a series regular after Velasco transferred from the Bronx.
His character faced mounting pressure throughout Season 25. Velasco struggled with anger management issues and clashed repeatedly with Captain Olivia Benson over his aggressive interrogation tactics.
The season finale saw Velasco make a crucial decision about his future with the unit. He chose to leave SVU to pursue new opportunities within the NYPD.
“Joe’s story isn’t over yet. We’re excited to explore where his journey takes him next,”
showrunner David Graziano said in a statement.
The premiere episode will address Velasco’s return and how it affects team dynamics. Sources close to production indicate his comeback won’t be permanent, but the exact length of his arc remains undisclosed.
Pisano’s return follows speculation about cast changes heading into Season 27. The show recently welcomed back several former cast members for milestone episodes.
Season 27 of Law & Order: SVU premieres October 3 on NBC. The series continues to hold its position as the longest-running primetime live-action series in television history.
