Ryan Murphy to exit Netflix following expiration of multi-million dollar deal Release Date

  • Netflix is parting ways with prominent showrunner Ryan Murphy as his $300 million, five-year production deal expires.
  • Murphy is reportedly heading to Disney to work with entertainment co-chairman Dana Walden.
  • During his time with Netflix, Murphy produced popular series such as The Politician, Hollywood, Ratched, and Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story.

Netflix will soon see the departure of one of its most high-profile showrunners, Ryan Murphy, as his five-year production deal, worth an estimated $300 million, comes to an end. Bloomberg initially reported that Murphy will be moving on to Disney, where he will reunite with entertainment co-chairman Dana Walden, who previously collaborated with him on several Fox and FX shows (Netflix was contacted for comment, while a Disney spokesperson declined to comment on the matter).

Murphy, the creative mind behind Glee and American Horror Story, started his partnership with Netflix in 2018 after signing a high-profile deal to produce content solely for the streaming platform. Throughout his time with the company, Murphy produced numerous series that frequently ranked among Netflix’s most-watched content upon release. These shows, which include The Politician, Hollywood, Ratched, and Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story featuring Evan Peters in the lead role, did not garner the same critical acclaim and awards buzz as his previous work, however. In addition to these series, Murphy produced the limited series Halston starring Ewan McGregor, and one-off films The Boys in the Band and The Prom for Netflix.

During his tenure at Netflix, Murphy remained an executive producer on several non-Netflix projects, such as Fox’s 9-1-1 (which is now transferring to ABC), 9-1-1: Lone Star, and FX’s American Horror Story, Pose, and Impeachment: American Crime Story. Murphy is also already confirmed to produce a new season of Feud starring Naomi Watts for FX.
