The Simpsons will return to theaters with a sequel to their 2007 animated film, according to an announcement from 20th Century Studios.
The studio confirmed the project during their presentation at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. The sequel has been scheduled for release in 2026, though no specific date was provided.
Matt Groening, the series creator, will return to oversee the project alongside longtime showrunner Al Jean.
The original film grossed over $536 million worldwide against a $75 million budget. It featured the Simpson family dealing with an environmental crisis in their hometown of Springfield.
“We’re excited to bring the Simpsons back to the big screen,” Jean said during the announcement. “The fans have been asking for this for years.”
The animated series has been running since 1989 and is currently in its 35th season. It holds the record as the longest-running American animated series and sitcom.
Production details remain limited at this stage. The studio hasn’t revealed plot details or which voice actors will return, though the main cast is expected to reprise their roles.
Dan Castellaneta, Julie Kavner, Nancy Cartwright, and Yeardley Smith have voiced the core Simpson family throughout the series’ run.
The announcement comes as Disney continues expanding their animated properties for theatrical releases. The company acquired 20th Century Fox, including The Simpsons franchise, in 2019.
The 2026 release will mark nearly two decades since the first film hit theaters in July 2007.
