Jennifer Hudson will step in as a coach on NBC’s “The Voice” while Kelly Clarkson takes time away following the death of her ex-husband.
The network confirmed Hudson’s temporary role after Clarkson requested a brief hiatus to handle personal matters. Clarkson’s ex-husband Brandon Blackstock died unexpectedly last week.
Hudson brings extensive experience to the coaching panel. She’s a Grammy-winning artist and Oscar winner who previously served as a coach on the show’s UK version.
“Kelly needs this time with her family,” a show insider said. “Jennifer was the natural choice to fill in.”
Clarkson has been a coach since Season 14. She’s won the competition twice and became one of the show’s most popular mentors.
The timing works well for Hudson’s schedule. She recently wrapped filming on her upcoming movie and had cleared her calendar for potential projects.
Production will continue without major delays. The show typically films multiple episodes in advance, giving producers flexibility when scheduling changes occur.
Clarkson hasn’t announced how long she’ll be away. Sources close to the production expect her return within the next few weeks.
Hudson’s coaching debut will air in episodes scheduled for later this month. She’ll work with the remaining contestants as the competition moves toward its finale.
The show’s other coaches – Blake Shelton and John Legend – will maintain their regular roles during the transition.
NBC expects the coaching change to be seamless for viewers. Hudson’s musical background aligns well with the show’s format and mentoring approach.
This marks Hudson’s first major television commitment since her talk show ended last year.
