The Walking Dead Dead City Renewed for Season 3 With a Twist Release Date

AMC has renewed The Walking Dead: Dead City for a third season, bringing back the popular spinoff series that follows Maggie and Negan’s adventures in post-apocalyptic Manhattan.

The network confirmed the renewal alongside an announcement that significantly expands the show’s scope.

Season 3 will feature a larger episode order than previous seasons. The first two seasons each contained six episodes, but AMC hasn’t revealed the exact episode count for the upcoming season.

Lauren Cohan and Jeffrey Dean Morgan will return as Maggie Rhee and Negan Smith respectively. Both actors have been central to the series since its debut in June 2023.

The spinoff takes place in a zombie-infested New York City. Maggie and Negan travel to Manhattan to rescue Maggie’s kidnapped son Herschel, forcing the former enemies to work together despite their complicated history.

“We’re thrilled to continue this story and explore more of what makes these characters so compelling together,”

said Dan McDermott, president of entertainment and AMC Studios for AMC Networks.

Season 2 concluded with several unresolved storylines that set up future conflicts.

The show has performed well for AMC since its premiere. Dead City represents one of several Walking Dead universe expansions, joining other spinoffs like The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon and The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live.

Eli Jorné serves as showrunner for the series. He previously worked as a writer and executive producer on The Walking Dead during its later seasons.

Production details for Season 3 haven’t been announced yet. The series films primarily in New York and New Jersey to capture the authentic Manhattan setting.

The renewal comes as AMC continues investing in The Walking Dead franchise despite the main series ending in 2022 after 11 seasons. Dead City has helped maintain audience interest in the zombie universe while exploring new characters and locations.

Season 3 is expected to premiere sometime in 2024, though AMC hasn’t confirmed a specific release date.
