  • The confirmation came during a presentation at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival.
  • Season 1 of Velma had a 40% score on Rotten Tomatoes and an average Metacritic score of 0.5.

The future of Velma, an animated comedy starring Mindy Kaling, is no longer uncertain as the show has been renewed for a second season. The confirmation comes from Suzanna Makkos, EVP of Original Comedy and Adult Animation at Max and Adult Swim, during her presentation of Max Original Adult Animation Slate at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival on Thursday.

During her presentation, Makkos also mentioned other shows that are currently in development, such as Anything Factory, Uptown Bodega, and Keeping Up With the Joneses. These new shows will be joining the existing lineup which includes Harley Quinn (returning for Season 4 this summer), Clone High (currently in production for Season 2, with an expected air date of 2024), DC’s Harley Quinn spinoff Kite Man: Hell Yeah!, and Creature Commandos, the first “new DCU” TV project from producers James Gunn and Peter Safran.

Velma’s first season featured ten episodes and streamed on Max (formerly HBO Max) from January 12th to February 9th. The show received mixed reviews, scoring 40 percent on Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer, but a measly 7% among audiences. Metacritic users gave it an average score of 0.5 out of 10.

Produced by Warner Bros. Animation, Velma is an adult animated comedy series that tells the origin story of Velma Dinkley, the brains behind the Scooby-Doo Mystery Inc. gang. As the official logline states, “This original and humorous spin unmasks the complex and colorful past of one of America’s most beloved mystery solvers.”

The show’s main voice cast includes Mindy Kaling as Velma, Glenn Howerton as Fred Jones, Sam Richardson as Norville Rogers (aka “Shaggy”), and Constance Wu as Daphne Blake. Season 1 featured guest voices from stars like Melissa Fumero, Jane Lynch, Wanda Sykes, Ming-Na Wen, Cherry Jones, Nicole Byer, Gary Cole, “Weird Al” Yankovic, Shay Mitchell, Debby Ryan, and Jim Rash.

The Streaming TV Scorecard has now been updated to reflect the news of Velma’s renewal. Fans of Max’s take on the Scooby gang can look forward to watching the show’s new season when it premieres.
