- Highly anticipated basketball drama “Winning Time” cancelled by HBO
- Scheduling conflicts for John C. Reilly led to his departure from the show
- Producers are now on the search for a new lead actor
HBO recently announced that it has cancelled the much-awaited “Winning Time,” a basketball drama series focused on the 1980s Los Angeles Lakers dynasty. John C. Reilly, the show’s lead actor, was forced to leave due to scheduling conflicts.
“Winning Time” was supposed to be a series showing the transformation of professional basketball into the globally popular sports franchise it is today, largely because of the Los Angeles Lakers. Magic Johnson, and the team’s owner, Jerry Buss, were major characters in the show. In fact, Reilly was set to play Buss in the series.
However, due to a change in the production schedule, the actor can no longer participate in the project. HBO is reportedly hoping to move forward with a replacement, though no name has yet been attached to the role.
The drama series, written by Max Borenstein and directed by Adam McKay, promised to delve into the lives of the iconic 1980s basketball players and ownership group. Fans of basketball history and HBO’s penchant for fast-paced and engaging storytelling were excited to see the story unfold on the small screen.
Unfortunately, fans will have to wait indefinitely until producers find a new lead actor to bring Jerry Buss’s character to life. Despite this setback, HBO remains hopeful that they can deliver the “Winning Time” viewers have been waiting for.
