Netflix is developing a reboot of the 1980s police drama T.J. Hooker, according to industry sources familiar with the project.
The streaming giant has greenlit early development on a modern take of the series that originally starred William Shatner as the title character. But this version comes with a significant change.
The new T.J. Hooker will feature a female lead in the role that Shatner made famous during the show’s original five-season run from 1982 to 1987.
“We’re reimagining the character for today’s audience while keeping the core elements that made the original compelling,”
said a Netflix executive who requested anonymity because the project is still in early stages.
The original series followed veteran police sergeant Thomas Jefferson Hooker as he mentored younger officers while working the streets. Shatner’s character was known for his no-nonsense approach to law enforcement and dedication to training rookies.
Netflix hasn’t announced casting for the lead role.
The project is part of the streaming service’s ongoing strategy to revive classic television properties with contemporary twists. Recent examples include reboots of Lost in Space and One Day at a Time.
Aaron Rahsaan Thomas, known for his work on S.W.A.T. and The Good Wife, is attached to write and executive produce the series.
No timeline has been set for production or release. The original T.J. Hooker also featured Heather Locklear and Adrian Zmed in supporting roles during its network television run on ABC and later CBS.
